In 1995, when the BJP first came to power in the state, the figure reduced by half to around 12.96%. The median margin of victory — that is, the difference between the votes received by the winner and the runner-up as a proportion of total valid votes polled — was 22.2% in 1962. 2012, it further slipped by two percentage points to 10.72%.
